Radical Ideas: Call for Submissions
In April 2016 Rich Mix turned 10. As part of our birthday celebrations we will be commissioning a range of new work that is rooted in the East End, and curating a programme that explores the historical, political and artistic context in which Rich Mix was conceived and founded. We intend for our programme to celebrate the rich diversity of the local area and to examine how the arts is closely linked to political and social change. This programme will look back at the history of protest, dissent and creativity in the East End and we hope that it will allow artists to imagine the London of the next decade and beyond.
For these celebrations, we are commissioning ten new pieces of work that will take place in our performance spaces upstairs between April 2016 and March 2017. We are offering a £500 commission, as well as rehearsal space here at Rich Mix, a performance included in the main programme and a split of the box office for the performance. Your proposal must be an original idea, which has not yet been shown, and cannot be shown elsewhere prior to your performance at Rich Mix.
As a guide, we invite you to respond to one or more of the themes below:
- Freedom of Speech
- Arts Funding
- Social Mobility
In order for your work to be considered, you must have been working in live performance for 5 years or less. Work must be no longer than 90 minutes (excluding interval), however we will consider shorter works to be presented as part of a double or triple bill.
If your work is chosen, you will benefit from:
- Inclusion in Rich Mix’s main artistic programme
- A £500 fee
- Ticket sale income on a box office split basis
- Inclusion in Rich Mix marketing materials
- Free performance space at Rich Mix in our studio theatre, supported by a full technical and front of house team
- Free rehearsal space in Rich Mix’s rehearsal room (At least 40 hours guaranteed, and more subject to availability and requirements)
- Expert support and advice from Rich Mix’s creative team and selected partners
- The opportunity for your work to be seen by industry professionals and networking opportunities
- Guidance from Rich Mix on future performance opportunities
The available performance slots are as follows – Friday 16 September, Friday 21 October and 25 November.
There are 10 slots in total, and applications for the remaining 3 dates (Jan, Feb, Mar 2017) will open later in the year.
Your submission will be reviewed by a professional panel headed by Oliver Carruthers – Rich Mix’s Head of Programming. He will be joined by a selection of leading arts practitioners from across London.
To apply, please download and complete the submission form below and return to firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘Radical Ideas – Submission’ in the subject line. Please also feel free contact us at that address with any queries relating to your application.
The deadline for submissions is strictly 5pm, Thursday 12 May.
