Serious Space: Alternative Ireland - An Evening with Meltybrains? and Loah
Thursday 17 May
All orders will be subject to a fee of £1.50 except if your tickets are free or if you are a member
In a nutshell
Serious is proud to present an evening with some of the most exciting artists to emerge from the Irish alternative music scene in recent years: featuring 5 piece experimentalists Meltybrains? and soulful singer songwriter Loah who grew up between Ireland and West Africa.
In recent years the Irish music scene has developed, diversified, and evolved far beyond the singer songwriters and stadium rock bands it has traditionally been known for – with now burgeoning electronic, Afro-soul, hip-hop scenes, and more. Serious is proud to present a selection of the most exciting artists to emerge from the fringes of that landscape whose music defies categorisation.
What to Expect
3 unique music acts representing the spectrum of new Irish alternative music – electronic, indie, Afro-soul – in a very special one-off live show.
Since their first appearances in Dublin in 2012, Meltybrains? have garnered a strong reputation for their unabashed creativity and unique, audience-engaging live shows – developing a cult following and selling out tours across the UK and Ireland, along with major festival appearances such as SXSW and Electric Picnic.
The chemistry between each member is infectious and their style has been compared to artists such as GOAT, Fuck Buttons, and Animal Collective, amongst others. The truth is, however, that Meltybrains? have no comparison, and they must be seen to be truly believed.
Fresh from her success at our Imagining Ireland concert at the Barbican in March, Loah will be performing a solo set in a double bill with Irish experimentalists. The Sierra Leonean / Irish singer songwriter returns to the club setting of Rich Mix to sing her special mix of soul, RnB and folk.
What people are saying
'They literally blew my mind. They're such accomplished musicians. All I can say is see Meltybrains? when you can. They are incredible live.' – Niamh Hegarty, BBC NI
'The band’s luscious auto-tune sprinkled harmonies to float freely until reaching a definite contender for percussion break of the year.' – Boiler Room
'Meltybrains? might be classical trained musicians, but their music is indefinable, their fans look like cult members, and their live shows are bewildering.' – Una Mullally, The Irish Times
The sweet melancholy soul of Loah, whose gentle confidence and style on the stage, singing in both in English, in her Irish accent, or in her Sierra Leonean language revealed what an outstanding talent she is.' - Irish World
Why does Rich Mix matter?
'Rich Mix is one of the most vital venues in London – bringing together artists and people of diverse backgrounds through art and culture.'
