Orchestre Les Mangelepa
Tuesday 24 July
All orders will be subject to a fee of £1.50 except if your tickets are free or if you are a member
This is the fist ever London gig for one of the greatest Congolese rumba big-bands of all time.
Forming in the 1970s Les Mangelepa are household names across East Africa where over the last 42 years they have penned over 13 albums and some of Africa’s biggest and best hits. Originally from Eastern Congo, the band settled in Kenya and were popular across the whole region from Uganda to Zambia. They encapsulate a distinctive East African sound and are the only band of their vintage who still perform and enchant crowds every week in downtown Nairobi. They have lost none of their energy and style and they are here to promote their new album out now on Strut Records. These elder musical statesmen justifiably warrant the title ‘Last Band Standing’.
'It’s evident that Orchestre Les Mangelepa are as potent today as they were in the 1970s, when they sported platform shoes and became dancefloor heroes across east Africa. Robin Denslow' ★★★★ The Guardian
