Hejira + Susso
Friday 24 November
In a nutshell
Susso and Hejira are set to blow you away with their contemporary world music sound
Led by producer/bassist Huw Bennet, Susso creates music inspired by, and directly sampling, the magnificent sounds of the Madinka people. Keira, their debut album, was recorded entirely during Bennet’s trip to Gambia and guides the listener through his journey, capturing and immortalising the essence of remote dusty villages and peaceful trips up rivers. Their captivating music is a mixture of call and response field recordings, electronic beats, and the compelling sound of electric bass.
Like Susso, Hejira’s latest project The Lima Limo Ceremony, captures the band’s visit to Ethiopia in 2016. In Ethiopia, they spent their time exploring the capital city, checking out live music, and writing new material. Upon their return to London, the band entered into a prolific phase of creativity, fleshing out skeletal ideas that began in Ethiopia, as well as writing new music from scratch, to produce a stunning album that combines the essence of Ethiopian music with a grungy, electronic sound.
Susso and Hejira are masters at marrying the hectic, chaotic shades of world music with the crisp, satisfying beats of electronica. For the musically adventurous, their joint performance at the intimate Rich Mix simply can’t be missed.
