about the film:
Join us on Sun 27 May to celebrate one of Britain’s true acting icons on his birthday weekend.
Built around a 14 hour interview, Playing the Part uncovers Sir Ian McKellen's story - from his upbringing during the war to his career of becoming a pioneering West End star. Since rising to stardom, he has been LGBT icon and a leader in the campaign for equality. His work and influence transcends generations.
This fully authorised interview features unprecedented access to private photo albums, a wealth of never-before-seen archive material (including diaries written when he was 12) and unseen behind-the-scenes footage. All alongside his personal thoughts on a life well lived.
McKellen: Playing the Part, hosted by Graham Norton and broadcast live to cinemas nationwide.
