what's it all about?
A young woman (Amy Appiah) legs it to Accra with her broke boyfriend (David Dontoh) after her unlucky father (Evans Oma) tries to push her into an arranged marriage with a wealthy businessman.
tell me more (don't worry, no spoilers)
Industrious family man and lorry driver, Addey (Evans Oma), makes ends meet by plying his trade between Accra and his village, Kukurantumi.
When he loses his job for reasons beyond his control, he plots a marriage between his daughter, Abena (Amy Appiah), and an affluent businessman. But Abena loves the penniless Bob (David Dontoh), and runs off with him for a better life in Accra, where things go from bad to worse.
One of the most celebrated Ghanaian films to emerge before the country’s video industry, Kukurantumi is intelligent filmmaking, situating the troubles of one family within the wider context of political corruption, poverty and class struggle within Ghanaian society.
Part of Film Africa’s Ghana @ 60 and Africa’s Lost Classics strands.
