Tower Hamlets Council presents
Sunday 1 July
In a nutshell
Rich Mix is out and about again with its popular bookswap in the Family and Art zone at the LBTH Boishakhi Mela, so bring an old book along to swap and go home with a brand new story.
Rich Mix are delighted to be working with our good friends from LBTH during the Mela; a fabulous celebration of Bengali music, performance and dance offers something for everyone, with family focussed activities, parade and workshops.
The Boishakhi Mela features an amazing main stage programme, spectacular parade, Family and Arts Zone and magnificent marketplace. This free, annual celebration is a key event in Tower Hamlets' cultural calendar, with a programme that appeals to everyone. A stunning procession will launch the mela and as the theme for 2018 is the Six Seasons of Bangladesh, the streets will be alive with imaginative depictions of nature with fabulous floats led by a magnificent peacock!
A stellar line-up on the main stage includes internationally renowned Chirkutt, as well as popular contemporary folk singer Ashik plus another dazzling and high-energy spectacle from Naz & Bolly Flex!
The Mela Family and Arts Zone will provide a range of free creative and wellbeing activities from 12noon to 6pm. Visual arts and crafts workshops as well as dance, music and storytelling performances provide an exciting way to engage with Bengali arts and culture. All are welcome but workshops will ideally be suited to those aged 6+. Kobita Corner is a designated poetry and exhibition space and new for 2018 is an intimate space for acoustic performance, 'Underneath the Banyan Tree'. Shop in the marketplace for delicious foods, crafts and goods, or visit the funfair!
What to Expect
Away from the main stage, the Family and Arts Zone will be an engaging hub for arts and crafts workshops including face-painting and mask-making as well as music and dance performances throughout the afternoon.
As enthusiastic book lovers, Rich Mix, in partnership with the LBTH Schools Library Service, will be on hand to help you choose books for and with your children. It’ll be lots of fun, with impromptu readings in the cosy Bengal storytent to have a quiet snuggle and read. And you can swap an old story for a brand new adventure, completely free!
