Dust and Shadows: Londonessence by Ed Gray
Until Thursday 28 July 2016
In a nutshell
An exhibition of paintings by London figurative painter Ed Gray. Gray’s work is an evolving exploration of the relationship between Londoners and their city.
Inspired by his artistic hero 18th century London painter William Hogarth, Gray scours the city’s streets in search of the vast unknowable spirit of London, sketching an assortment of London characters as he goes. These fleeting moments are then reconfigured using chalk gathered from the Thames shore of his Rotherhithe home and layered with charcoal and acrylic paint. The resulting gritty narratives are filled with symbolism and mythology that speaks of London past and present.
Highlights from this collection of paintings and prints include works inspired by Adoration paintings from the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery which serve to reaffirm Gray’s belief in the city of London as a source of artistic inspiration and faith in humanity.
