London based Grime MC AFRIKAN BOY and UK Hip Hop legend TY will be jointly headlining The Shrine on the 2nd December!
In 2007 Nigerian born Afrikan Boy release the track ‘One day I went to Lidl’, which became a worldwide internet smash getting over 7 million hits on YouTube. Since then he has collaborated and toured with MIA, supporting artists including Prince and Bjork, and released a number of singles and remixes including ‘Lagos Town’. In June he released a mixtape titled ‘What Took You So Long’ on his website as a free download, which is a prelude to his forthcoming official EP and he also featured on DJ Shadow’s new single ‘I’m Excited’, which was chosen by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe as his ‘Hottest Record’ in July. This will Afrikan Boy’s first appearance at The Shrine and we’re very excited to have him!
TY is one of UK Black music’s true innovators and popularisers. He’s been making music and pushing boundaries for the last 12 years with four albums, a Mercury Music nomination and countless guest appearances under his belt. He’s probably best known for his infectious live shows and TY has toured all over the world established a strong fan base wherever he plays. TY’s a thoughtful, political spokesperson, producer, musician, MC and poet and man of the people and we’re delighted to have him back at The Shrine.
DJ Support will be from MAX REINHARDT (BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction) who will be playing his Afrocentric Rebel selection of beats, ryddims, licks and mash ups from all over Africa and far beyond.
