Indian Ocean Sound System was set up in 1983 and was the first Asian sound system to be given a slot on Kiss FM during their pirate days in early 90's playing bhangra, desi beats and bollywood filmi music. The slot on Kiss FM gave selector Sudha Rani and the sound an opportunity to play new up coming Asian artists/ bands e.g Apache Indian, Cornershop, and Fun-da-mental to name a few aswell as formatting a new innovative live radio show complete with hard hitting jingles and sound fx.
The sound has also performed at various festivals and events including Crawley Mela, Nottingham Apna Arts Festival, East London Mela Anti - Racist festival in Plumstead . In 1994 the man behind the sound DJ Ashman produced the cutting egde EP " Punjabi Rockers" on Birmingham based Oriental Star Agency label. Punjabi Rockers featured the vocal talents of Pakistani Film Playback singer Irene Parveen singing over a jungle mix of punjabi folk song Chimta Tan Vajda and Reggae Rockers version of Charkha Channan Da another classic Punjabi folk song.
In 1994 Ashman created " Jam with Ashman" a pioneering cable TV show for Namaste TV which featured interviews of mainly Asian artists and bands in the studio including Panjabi MC, Cornershop, Asian female rapper Hardcore, Apache Indian, Bally Sagoo, Channi from Alaap to name a few.
DJ Koichi Sakai is a London based DJ, musician, producer and promoter. Koichi is widely recognised for his highly developed and unique style, which reflects the varied influences that have continuously informed his creativity and career. His musical style is jazzy and percussive, playing a distinctive and smooth mix of Soul, Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Latin and Afrobeat.
Rich Mix's very own reticent DJ ("I don't do requests - Oh all right then.."), PanditG will be playing classic funk, soul, jazz, and roots reggae for a discerning Sunday tea-time crowd. So come and unwind after stressful sales shopping ( MMR - more mature ravers especially welcome!)
