Blinded by Guilt
This debut work takes its place in India’s emerging independent cinema which attempts to portray its current social predicament head on, no holds barred. The film, produced by Anurag Kashyap and starring Naseeruddin Shah, follows the lives of a chain of people as they merge and get lost in Kolkata ‘s landscape. First-time director Ribhu Dasgupta displays a keen and observant eye on the strange tide that at times juggles our fate.
India’s versatile and impassioned actor Naseeruddin Shah plays the main role of police officer Michael. At the start, old and infirm, he stands still with Kolkata’s traffic whizzing around him. A flashback reveals the young policeman Michael, hesitant and reluctant as he is forced to carry out an order to shoot at a peaceful march. In doing so, he inadvertently kills a 12-year-old boy. The guilt gets to him and he begins to cave on. His failing eyesight leads to him losing his job. In his need to care for his own small son, he joins the piracy trade of illegally selling Bollywood DVDs. He then begins to get calls from the father of the boy he killed, threatening to do away with Michael’s son as the boy’s 12th birthday approaches.
