Csergo Band
Csergo Band plays traditional folk and Gypsy music from Transylvania, where the mix of Hungarian, Romanian and Gypsy (Roma) rhythms and melodies intertwine and borders fade. All of the band members regularly visit the leading virtuoso Gypsy musicians in the remote villages of Transylvania, to learn this ancient and beautiful music directly from the source.
Travelling back to Transylvania is like going back a few hundred years; one begins to understand how it is possible that almost every small village there preserves it's own unique style of playing (and dancing), and seemingly endless and unique repertoire, and how politics, wars, linguistic and accessibility issues have allowed these melodies and dances to remain intact for so many years. Csergo band bring this gem to you in London. Their line-up has now expanded to include Cristi, an amazing Moldavian Gypsy cimbalom (dulcimer) player.
After several collaborations, Csergo band has now officially joined forces with the fantastic award-winning Transylvanian singer Monooka.
Monooka
Amazing vocals, clean chords, rhymes full of feeling. She graduated the University of Theatre and Film, UNATC-Bucharest, 2003 acting and puppetry. In 2006 she made her first public appearance as a singer at the Art Jazz Club in Bucharest. Her first project, ‘Doina Jazzului’ was nominated for the debut award in Romanian jazz. Since coming to London, she has continued singing traditional music from Romania in several projects, thereby helping to keep this beautiful music alive.
Part of the East in East: Euro 2012 Festival.
