Tales of Vagabonds, Thieves and Chancers

With Christine and Ben McMahon, Ben Haggarty and TUUP

A canting crew of mendicant storytellers raid the treasure house of world folklore, myth and fairytale. In this glittering hoard of quick-witted, cruel and cunning stories - top dogs are bested by underdogs, bribery and corruption in high places is exposed ,and it is indeed possible to get something for nothing...

Lancashire lass, Christine McMahon comes down to the dodgy south - button-holing a brass section along the way - to be joined by Transglobal Underground's TUUP and Crick Crack Club Maestro, Ben Haggarty.

Join this motley bunch of chancers for a night of deceit and treachery...

‘Nicely bonkers’ Hugh Lupton

Biographies:

TUUP:
Born in Guyana and raised in Acton, West London, Godfrey Duncan - TUUP (The Unorthodox, Unprecedented Preacher) - has been a professional storyteller since 1981, when he joined Ben Haggarty and Daisy Keable to form the West London Storytelling Unit. He is truly an elder of the storytelling revival in Britain. His style of total improvisation, fabulous capacity for mimicry and ear for a wild story is outstanding. He has a deeply sensitive spirit, which means that he can sometimes create very moving spontaneous poetry. He has travelled the world, telling stories all over Europe and in Northern and Southern Africa. He has performed in many countries in Asia and both North and South America in his role as a creative lyricist, poet, percussionist and vocalist with the highly influential dance music collective, Transglobal Underground.

Ben Haggarty:
Ben is a world-class performance storyteller, whose work delights and subverts audiences across the English-speaking world. A master of improvisation, he is internationally respected for his playful, physical and challenging performances of stories inspired by international fairytales, folk tales, myth and epic, in venues that have ranged from caves to the Carnegie Hall. A regular performer at the Barbican and Soho theatres in London, Ben tours work for adults and families to venues across the UK. He has featured as guest storyteller in over 100 International Storytelling Festivals in over 25 countries, and is a member of Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble

‘Haggarty tells his stories with enormous gusto and relish...’ The Independent

Christine McMahon:
Born to a Lancashire father and a Yorkshire mother. Christine has lived her life on both sides of the crags. The result is a vibrant, unflappable, performer with a quick wit, and a bone dry sense of humour. With a background in drama and psychology, by day Christine works with storytelling in restorative justice with young people, and by night, she takes to the stage. Tonight she will be joined by Ben McMahon who plays something big, brassy and delightfully noisy.
