In the Shadows of Senghor Wed 22 October | Venue 2 10.00am – 12.30pm and 1.00pm – 3.30pm £5 per student; accompanying adults admitted FREE of charge Level: Key Stages 3, 4 & 5 These performance and theatre workshops for Key Stage 3, 4 & 5 students will explore the concepts of identity and cultural heritage using the poetry of Senegalese politician and poet Leopold Sedar Senghor. Students will be introduced to a different approach of theatre-making and will explore ways in which poetry can be translated into physical theatre and dance. The workshops will offer students the chance to express their opinions on issues of identity and will encourage them to enhance their creativity and confidence through self-expression. Students will have the opportunity to choreograph their own short performances which will be showcased at the end of the workshop. Director and performance artist Tonny Ajoup will lead the sessions together with percussionist David Naylor. Please note there is a maximum capacity of 30 students per workshop. |

Africa’s Hope workshops Thu 27 and Fri 28 November | Venue 1 10.00am – 12.00pm and 1.30pm – 3.30pm These education workshops are for schools and colleges in Tower Hamlets only and are FREE of charge. Level: Key Stages 3 & 4 and Post-16 The Aegis Trust and Mashirika present Africa's Hope – high-impact stories of survival of genocide in Rwanda alongside the incredible energy and irresistible rhythms of live African dance and drumming. These engaging and active workshops with full cast involvement combine image, theatre, drumming and singing for students aged 11 - 18. Each workshop begins with an introductory talk and discussion on understanding genocide led by Hope Azeda, Artistic Director of Mashirika. Adult cast members lead the workshops, dividing the students into groups for either singing or drama and movement. Younger cast members interact with students and join in the workshops as support in each group. The importance of the relationship and trust between actors and students is continually emphasised. The workshops demonstrate the portrayal of sensitive real-life stories through the performing arts. The power of these workshops encourages students to develop empathy and understanding of the implications and consequences of racism and prejudice. Please note there is a maximum capacity of 30 students per workshop. |
