Tempered Body Dance Theatre

Associate

Founded in 2007, Tempered Body continually strives to make work that is engaging and relevant, embracing exciting collaborative opportunities with non-dance disciplines and making work that is accessible and inspiring to audiences of all ages and backgrounds, investigating the integrity and strength of the human body and the frailty of the emotional landscape. The company prides itself on being made up of unique and versatile artists, whose individuality create the rich tapestry of the repertoire.

As the young company gains momentum they continue to deliver quality and innovative dance work, building a reputation in the UK dance scene. In 2009, they were appointed resident company of Chisenhale Dance Space, a position they continue to hold. In April 2010 they became Associate Company at Rich Mix.

Maddy Wynne-Jones – Artistic Director

Maddy has been working primarily in London since moving from Canada, where she trained and began her professional career. She is a dancer, choreographer and teacher, heavily influenced by collaborating with other art forms and inspired by the challenge of pushing the boundaries of physical and emotional awareness. Her work is informed by a curiosity of the relationship between bodies, sound and space. With the company she has created Body Of Work (2010), Amuse Bouche (2009), Landing (2008), Spoke (2008) Tag Along (2007), and Not Me Now (2007) – works that have been performed throughout London and the South East, and further afield. Maddy teaches contemporary dance and ballet internationally, maintaining a strong professional link with her North American roots. She is also the founder and director of The Highgate Ballet School Youth Dance Company, which is supported by Tempered Body.

“My work begins with an exploration into foundational emotions. I believe that every human body has a visceral response to dance, and that this response allows for an unencumbered journey through our shared experience of being alive; a journey embarked on by performer and observer collectively. I am fascinated by space and the body’s ability to exist in it. I am drawn to the architecture of the body as it locates andcarves out moments and experiences in this space. I am humbled by the present tense of dance; that it can exist only now. When I create, I try to inhabit that now and allow my physicality to respond to the unpredictable influences that live there. For me, there is honesty in this surrender.

My practice now is about moving through and beyond the vocabulary of traditional dance in order to navigate the paths that give pulse to the narrative I am exploring. I am committed to the strength and versatility of the body and hope to make work that pushes physical boundaries and amplifies the integrity of our corporeal force.”
